Eastland Citizen Police Academy

NEW!
Beginning in March 2006, a new 12 hour segment will be
added, covering the
CITIZENS ON PATROL program and the training necessary to
participate.

WHAT IS IT?
The Eastland Police Department Citizen Police
Academy is a 36 hour block of instruction designed to give the public a working
knowledge of the Eastland Police Department personnel and policies. It consists
of a series of twelve classes, held once each week for three hours. The
instruction is comprehensive, covering a different area of the police
department and justice system each week. Officers, supervisors and personnel
assigned to that particular function conduct each instructional block.
WHO MAY ATTEND?
The class is made up of a cross-section of the
Eastland community. Doctors, merchants, homemakers, laborers, students,
secretaries, salespersons and others are encouraged to apply for admission. The
Academy is held twice each year, once in the Spring and once in the Fall. The
Academy runs for twelve consecutive Tuesday nights from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM.
The minimum age for enrollment is 18 and you must live or work in Eastland
County to be eligible to attend.
THE PURPOSE
The Eastland Citizen Police Academy was created
in order to provide enough information to the citizens that attend so that they
may make informed judgements about the police department and police activity.
It is further hoped that the instruction will increase police awareness whereas
to dispel suspicions and misconceptions and to increase police/community
rapport through this educational process. The department, in turn, becomes more
aware of the feelings and concerns of the community from the students'
interaction and input. It is, indeed, a two-way learning experience.
TOPICS
The Eastland Citizen Police Academy covers such
diverse topics as training, communications, criminal investigations, DWI
procedures, crime prevention, family violence, juvenile law, and community
supervision. Emphasis is placed on the patrol division, as that is the segment
of the police department the public most often comes into contact with.
Instruction in these and other topics will consist of lectures, demonstrations,
tours, and hands-on experiences, including a ride-along segment with patrol
officers.
